Hi,
I'm not exactly sure what context the "Clone" action in the Foreman web
interface for a host is meant to be used for…
I'm currently only using Foreman to manage hosts which are virtual machines
on a libvirt provider. Sometimes it would be convenient if I could just
"clone" one of those hosts directly via Foreman, I mean: create a new host
on the same compute resource which has the same settings as the host you
are cloning; I do not mean "clone its disk and state", just its settings,
to avoid having to go through all the settings pages you have to fill when
creating a new host from scratch.
It's not a matter of life or death, ok, but could be handy.
I tried using the "Clone" button in this context, but it didn't end up very
well: it appears Foreman tries to create a new host with the same MAC
address as the original one, so the Smart Proxy tries to use the already
assigned IP address for it and the host creation fails.
Is this the expected behaviour? Maybe the clone functionality is not meant
to be used with libvirt providers?
the clone button is not intended to clone VM, but to make copies of host
records. You usually change MAC address when provisioning bare metal and
that's it.
Maybe we could change to "Duplicate" or something like that. Clone is
maybe too confusing as we are often cloning VMs.
