Help to find a term for "widget"

Hello,

Ondrej is working on a patch that adds page and tab extensibility with
"widgets", or rather Rails "partials". It is a bit similar concept as
Dashboard Widgets, but these (let's just say) "partials" are static ERB
templates and cannot be re-ordered or closed by the user.

The idea is simple: We can define extension points for particular pages
or tabs and plugins can add named partials. We are currently discussing
how much we want to put into the data structure (rows, columns,
placement information), but that's the basic idea.

It is currently named widgets, but to avoid confusion between Foreman
Dashboard Widgets, I suggest to find a better name. Options so far:

  • widget (like in Dashboard)
  • partial (like in Rails)
  • snippet (like in Provisioning Templates)
  • fragment (like in Rails Cache)
  • shred
  • bit
  • portion
  • portlet
  • mashup

Ok that's out of control…

Send your votes or suggestions.

Thanks!

PageExtension ? I'd rather not introduce new language that make our
codebase more difficult to understand to newcomers.
