Introducing #theforeman-dev-ui, an experiment

The UX team is playing with the idea of forking UI discussions out into a
separate channel. We will do a month long experiment and see how it goes.

*Background:* The irc channel #theforeman-dev is very busy and there are
often times multiple conversations taking place simultaneously.

*Hypothesis:* By using the irc channel #theforeman-dev-ui conversations
will be more relevant to those who are concerned mainly with UI topics.
Having a smaller channel will also facilitate more conversation because of
this focus.

*Methodology:* All interested in UI related conversations will use
#theforeman-dev-ui for a month and then users on this mailing list will be
polled about their experience during the month.

Please join #theforeman-dev-ui on freenode if you are interested in
participating in our (unpaid) research study.

Thanks,
Walden

*References:*

Please keep at least generic conversation on dev channel and list
going, also increase amount of effort you guys put into demos. I'd
like to hear more on regular demos about UX, plans, technologies and
decisions being made.

Whilst I'm generally against fragmentation of similar discussion types
(i.e dev chat in this case), I can see why you want to test this out.
Will be interested in seeing your results.

BTW I can add it to the Matrix Foreman community if you OP me on the
channel.

Facilitate, yes. Also could potentially exclude people too, especially
if they don't see this thread. If this channel persists after your poll,
please do send PRs to the website etc so that *new* people to the chat
community know where to find discussions.

You'll have to talk to Ohad about that, he's the only one with ops
currently.

Will do.

Well it’s been well over a month so here’s a little poll about the new #theforeman-dev-ui irc channel.

  • I like the new #theforeman-dev-ui channel!
  • I dislike the new #theforeman-dev-ui channel!
  • I don’t really care one way or the other
  • What #theforeman-dev-ui channel?

Please also feel free to comment on this thread with any opinions about breaking out all UI related conversation to #theforeman-dev-ui.

Thanks,
Walden

I tried following both channels but it seems like unnecessary overhead to me. I’d prefer if all the conversation happened in #theforeman-dev, I didn’t find the ui channel to be overly spammy and if it was #theforeman-dev channel, more people could be involved

Up until now I didn’t know there was a UI IRC channel, but I think too that conversations about UI/UX can and should happen in foreman-dev.

Also having more discussions here on discourse would be nice. Not only about related code changes, but also follow ups on the “Dev/Design Weekly Demo Notes” and conclusions on what UX/UI changes are going on would be great to see.

Sorry for the delay in my reply, it’s been way longer than a month.

After much consideration we have decided to get rid of this channel and move UI related conversations back into #theforeman-dev. There channel hasn’t been used much (about 30 messages total over the last week) and there are a number of benefits to having conversations in a more visible channel (more transparency, chance to spread knowledge, etc).

Thanks,
Walden
