Investigation of Katello Content as an Engine

A small group of developers from the Foreman and Katello communities have
begun a spike to examine the feasibility of applying Katello content on top
of the Foreman code base through an engine. The goal is to get a
constrained workflow working to learn the complexities and shed light on
integration points. The team has agreed to have an open discussion in the
following ways:

IRC: Freenode #katello

  • since this is targeting heavy Katello concepts and #theforeman-dev has
    heavier traffic
  • Foreman community members interested in the discussion should join

Mailing List: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/foreman-dev

  • to gather Foreman community feedback and share the discussion
  • Katello community members interested in contributing should join this
    mailing list

Git Repo:

  • starter Rails engine to pull in Katello entities and integrate them
    with Foreman concepts
  • https://github.com/theforeman/foreman_content
  • the team members working on this actively will have commit access
  • community members from both projects are encouraged to watch this
    repository, comment and review

Demos:

  • Every 1-2 weeks
  • Summaries of the work so far every week

Email to follow this one on foreman-dev list with respects to discussions
so far on the spike and targets for the work being done thus far.

Thanks

For those interested in daily progress and notes from the team working on
this effort please see http://pad-katello.rhcloud.com/p/enginifcation.

There is also a link at the top to a separate etherpad where general notes
are being collected as we progress. Further, there is also a current
investigation into the other option of Katello being moved as is to an
engine and integrated into Foreman and that branch can be found upstream
here - https://github.com/Katello/katello/tree/enginify
