Location and Organization mismatch report

I'm wondering if there is any documentation on the Location/Organization
mismatch report. I would like to know how it works and what the possible
causes for a mismatch are. Many users experience problems where they
aren't able to access certain locations/organizations because there is a
mismatch on their account or one of their hosts. I'm always puzzled by the
report since mismatches seem to happen randomly and aren't predictable but
this just may be due to my ignorance.

Hi Dylan,

The goal is obviously not to have any mismatches. On the UI, you should see disabled selections with a tool-tip saying "this is used by a host" that prevents a user from de-selecting it on the location/organization form or on the location/organization tabs of a resource (domain, compute resources, etc). In previous versions, these "safe-guards" were't there and mismatches could occur. Also, mismatches may occur when making changes through the API. What version of Foreman are you using?

Thanks for the response Joseph,

We're currently running version 1.5.0 but we've been having these issues
since 1.4 and possibly earlier. There aren't any users using the API so I
don't think that's it. I think it could also be permission related since
after changing the "owner" of all hosts in their organization to an admin
user, the mismatch goes away.

Dlyan,

Were the mismatches only on "User" in the Mismatch Report? It seems that it's possible for an admin user to assign a non-admin to be the owner of a host, but the non-admin owner is not part of the location/organization that the host is assigned to. Is so, then there is a mismatch. It looks like this is a bug and I entered a Red Mine issue
http://projects.theforeman.org/issues/7559

Do you think this is the case that you're dealing with?

Regards,

Joseph

Joseph,

I don't think that's it. The owner is correctly set as the user that
creates the host. They create the host under the organization/location
they belong to, however, sometimes the mismatch comes about and its only
fixed once the hosts in the user's org are assigned to an admin user.

I'm sorry I can't give you more information, is there anything I can
provide that could give you better insight into whats going on? I have
debug logs enabled but since I don't know when or what triggers the
mismatch, I'm not sure what to look for.
