Hi
My use case is that i need to move some hosts built in 1 ORG to another
ORG.
The I thought i could do this through the UI, ALL Hosts --> Select Host,
Select actions to change ORG/Location/Environment/Host Group etc
The result is that the UI complains about mis-matches, if i force it to
proceed with the mis-match, everything seems to work except that i see that
the HOSTGROUP that the host was previously in is copied/linked over into
the new organisation. A bit bizarre!
I wondered what would be the correct procedure to complete this tasks
without the issue i am seeing.
IE
- Set host to a blank Host Group
- Unmanage the host
- Unregister it for Content
-Then do the move
-Then subscribe with the new orgs activations keys
Sorry for my lack of understanding, but
- Unmanage Host - will do what exactly? remove the ability to
provisioning the host/set host group/parameters etc?
- Unregister content host - will do what exactly? remove the host from
pointing at content views/puppet configuration?
Many thanks
would it be cleaner just to delete the host as another option?
Thank Stephen
Not sure why i would want hostgroups from one org in another org.
I can make changes to the HG in ORG2 that get replicated to the HG in ORG1
- surely that is not write especially as the orgs should/could be managed
by different groups?
Is there a way to remove the duplication?
OK - so if i set a host to have no hostgroup, i should be able to move the
host without unmanaging/deregistering aswell?

It's just a link. If you move the host from one org to another, all of
the hosts objects need to be accessible from the new org.
If you don't want to do that, unset the particular settings like host
group.

Just provisioning, and basically makes Foreman only report info about
the host, but not manage

It deletes the content host

They are the same host group, there is no duplication. Foreman objects
can be shared across many organizations.
You cannot move a host from OrgA to OrgB if its host group or any other
object is not available in OrgB.

apologies, maybe i am confused, it does not make sense to have HG shared
between ORGS, unless i am missing something. i dont think i can even
select a HG from ORGA when i am in ORGB. A HG has specific details to that
ORG. I will test.
I dont want the HG groups to be the same. A HG in a ORG will have a
different organisation/lifecylce/ocnfig or whatever defined. When i did
the move, i selected to change the HG for the server to be that of the HG
in the ORGB, it updated the host but brought the ORGA HG with it. I did'nt
expect it to bring the ORGA HG over with it and created a link, why not
just move the host? I guess that is what is the confusing part.
like you say. I will just set the host i am moving to having no HG and
then there should be no linking to the previous HG.
