OPW 2015 application : Foreman as a Service

Ma'am/Sir,

I am Ishani Chugh, a third year undergraduate student of Electronics and
Communications Engineering at International Institute of Information
Technology, Hyderabad. I am passionate about Open Source Development. I
have some experience working with git and have worked on Ruby on Rails as a
part of course assignments and Projects. I aspire to contribute to Foreman
as Open source Developer under OPW and I am interested in working on the
project 'Foreman as a Service', since I feel I have the enthusiasm and
skills required. I apologise for late entry as I was unknown to this
program. I see that the project has not been allocated mentors. I would
highly appreciate any assistance regarding the contribution and project
proposal draft.

Sincerely,
Ishani

Hi Ishani and welcome to the community

Firstly, you say you're an undergraduate - please note that the
Outreachy (formerly OPW) program requires that you not be in full-time
work or education from Dec-Mar to qualify[1]. Will that be the case?

Even if you aren't available for this round, now is still a great time
to get involved, so that you can be ready for the next round

So, for either scenario, here's some generally useful info (which can,
of course, be found on our site). Your first steps are getting to know
us, and us getting to know you. I'd recommend reading the manual[2]
and the developer setup guide[3] and playing around with the software.
Feel free to join our IRC channels[4] to ask questions, and once
you're comfortable with the software, you can ask there for
suggestions of easy things to fix - already being a contributor is
recommended when applying for an internship[5]

As for the Foreman-as-a-Service project, you are correct that it is in
need of a new mentor. Currently no-one has offered to mentor that
project - perhaps if you get to know us, someone will offer to do so

Regards,

Hello,
Thanks for the response. I am aware of the outreachy eligibility criteria
and it requires you to be dedicate 40 hours of work per week which is
easily possible in my case. I am having vactions for entire December and
mid of January and moreover the college curriculum is flexible enough to
provide me with ample time to contribute during the remaining half when
vacations will be over. That is why I opted for applying to the current
programme.

Regards,
Ishani

That's great - I only ask because it wasn't clear from your first mail

I think you might just have time to submit an application, if you're
quick - but then I'd focus on getting Foreman running and making some
contributions. You can edit your application until Nov 17th, so long
as it's submitted today, so you can always add that to your
application once you've done so.

I think the Foreman-as-a-Service project is unlikely to get a new
mentor by 17th Nov, however, so you may want to check and see if
anything else is suitable for your skillset.

Regards,
Greg
