Pre-RC release meetings

One of the issues we've had over the last few releases is communication around pending issues and bringing them to attention of developers who have available time to work on fixing problems before the first RC. A potential solution to that problem is having weekly meetings to talk about pending issues for a few weeks before the first RC is released. What do you all think about having weekly meetings (on Mondays probably) the last 3 weeks before the initial RC to talk about outstanding bugs and features that are slated for the upcoming release? IRC with something like meetbot seems like a nice solution but I'm totally open to suggestions around the medium we end up using for the meetings.

Thoughts?
