Can't find any information if it's a good idea to upgrade from foreman
1.7.4 directly to 1.9.x or if I should upgrade via a 1.8 first?
Seen there are a few problems upgrading to 1.8 so would be happy if we
could jump that version.

while it's technically possible, we recommend (and test) only upgrades per one
major version, so if possible, go through 1.8.4.

I'll add that never skip upgrade notes. By skipping a release, you'd
essentially do that. Upgrade notes sometimes have very important
instructions!
