Disable auto-IP suggest?

Hi folks,

Is there a way to disable the "IP address auto suggest" function on the
host network details page? This doesn't work well in our environment and
can sometimes confuse the junior sysadmins!

Thanks in advance,
Pete

Hello,

I don't think we have that feature, but it should be possible to
implement this as a global setting.

But I'd rather invest some time into finding why this does not work in
your environment.

Any progress on this issue? I'm interested in using it as well.

It's pretty much what Josh said. IPs are centrally assigned by our network
team who run their own inventory. These can end up on any one of a number
of DHCP servers around the organisation. We run a small DHCP server solely
for the purpose of PXE booting installs, after that all IPs are statically
configured.

I agree, you can turn off DHCP integration completely (by removing the dhcp
proxy from the subnet and disabling IP address auto suggestion), but if you
are using DHCP proxy already, I would be happy to know why it does not work
for you?

thanks!

I want to specify the ip address only manually, our ip management is done
by an external network team who gives me an specifically ip to use for the
machine I'm installing. Sometimes the foreman suggest a reserved ip, of
course it's not a bug because foreman is not able to know the real ip.

Our IPAM solution is not connected directly to the DHCP servers that
Foreman plays with, so we are already manually plugging the IP into
foreman. Next Available discovery usually has a very high chance of
creating an IP conflict, even if the smart-proxy pings the whole dhcp
range, local firewalls and subnet firewalls may defeat the attempt at
conflict avoidance.

For what it's worth, I would like the auto-IP suggest feature disabled as
well. Our IPs are manually assigned prior to provisioning, yet we still
use DHCP for PXE. I have been having to clear out the auto suggestion and
type in my own IP.

Wow, I didn't expect this thread to have this traction.

I've opened Bug #6529: Make DHCP auto-suggest IP configurable - Foreman to keep track of
this.

I've hacked something at https://github.com/theforeman/foreman/pull/1625,
hopefully it would be good enough before 1.6 is released.

We're currently running 1.5.1. Should I upgrade to 1.5.2 before pushing
this patch in? This is our first week with Foreman provisioning non test
servers, and we're having a hell of a time with the dhcp, so I need to do
something soon.

The feature will be in 1.6, I definitely encourage you to update to 1.5.2,
but it won't have the patch unless you cherry-pick the commit (not
guaranteed to work without conflicts). If you wait for 1.6 it'll be there
without having to do anything else on your side.

note that you would also need to recompile the javascript assets or to
disable asset compliation for it to work.

Thanks, I did upgrade to 1.5.2 in order to fix some dhcp conflict problems.
The only problem I had then was that I have multiple subnets managed by one
proxy. Each of those subnets has a different next server ip address
(pointing to the same server, but different interfaces) due to firewall
restrictions. I followed
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/foreman-users/KFNh0iMJR70 to not
have the next server overridden, and now everything seems to work well.
