Eliminating Red Hat Satellite for open source tools

Hello,

I'm having a hard time finding a solid answer to this question so I just
wanted to throw it out there to see if anyone can help.

As usual, cost savings are being pushed hard and I'm looking at the
possibility of managing our RHEL servers with the open source tools
(foreman, katello, puppet, etc.) rather than using Red Hat Satellite. We're
still on Satellite 5 and will have to learn Satellite 6 anyways…

Basically, is it possible to use those applications for RHEL without a
Satellite subscription? I have foreman+katello installed to test it out and
see where you import the manifest but is that manifest available without
already having a Satellite subscription? I would still obviously pay for
the RHEL server licenses so they would still be valid.

Thank you!

Joe

Look into Spacewalk its free, but there are lots of moving pieces to this
software.

Greetings,

you can easily use Foreman+Katello+Puppet+… for managing RHEL servers,
nothing prevents you from attaching SAM manifest to Katello and using
RedHat repositories after that.

Hi There

The clean answer is not you can't use katello for get updates from Red Hat
free of cost if you want to deploy katello instead to buy Satellite 6 you
can use the creation of a manifest on
https://access.redhat.com/management/distributors?type=sam subcription
management assent and upload to katello in this way you can get the repos
but of course depending of how many licenses you have is how many servers
you can deploy via katello if you really doesn't care about support because
you are confident to do it my suggestion to reduce you cost could be server
that is not critical impacted the business use centos and install katello
for manage all the centos servers and only buy subscriptions for the
necessary sever that need and you can upload the manifest into katello and
manage also the Red Hat ones here the great saving is on the satellite

As another look at the problem are there any here who can give any reasons
why using Satellite might be better than Katello+friends? That is, is the
interface any better, etc?

Toss in pulp and candlepin and you have Red Hat Satellite 6

Not exactly.

Red Hat Satellite 6 have same relation with
Foreman+Katello+Puppet+Pulp+Candlepin as RHEL and Fedora or Satellite 5 and
Spacewalk – it was more stable and always out of date.

You can easily run Pulp and import a subscription certificate to sync RHEL
repositories. This doesn't even require Katello.

The use of katello instead of Satellite 6 will not render you unable to
get support on the host that is managed. It will mean you can not get
support on the katello instance you are running. If you see an issue,
you will be asked to reproduce the issue without interacting with katello.

Let me first give your the company answer [1].

From a practical POV, the Foreman and Katello of today is the Satellite
of tomorrow. There is no technical or UI difference. Rather, it is a
cost vs. expectation of support question. This question is not unique to
this community. It is the same for relationship between Fedora and Red
Hat Enterprise Linux, WildFly and JbossAS, and any other community Red
Hat participates in.

If you use the upstream version, bugs are most likely fixed in the next
release. If you use the downstream version, your subscription provides
you you the relationship to request fixes in the same version you have.
In addition, with a subscription, there are associates to call who you
can ask questions of in addition to the very good support you get on
upstream irc and mailing lists. This is time vs cost question which each
user needs to evaluate.

The code is the same, and any bug which a Red Hat employee fixes is
first sent upstream so that he community benefits.

Let me know if that helps to answer your question.

Thanks!

katello upstream brings together all the plugins which compose
downstream Satellite 6. If you are interested to see where Satellite 6
is going, this is the place to be.
