Katello UX nitpick - Sync Status

Hey,

I constantly keep mis-clicking on Sync Plans instead Sync Status in Katello.

Any UX advice how to change that? I suggest either rename one to be
more visible so you can easily target that with mouse or break these
two guys into different main menu entries.

Hey,

As part of my campaign to reduce the number of menu items I would love to
remove the sync status page entirely.

As far as I know the sync status page doesn't really provide any additional
functionality over the products page with the exception of being able to
select individual repositories from diverse products to sync (i.e. the
products page bulk sync forces you to sync all of the repositories in each
product). I think we could add this to the products page pretty easily.

There is also a dashboard widget that shows sync status if you use the sync
status page just to look at the status of your syncs.

So really what is the purpose of the sync status page?

Cheers,
Walden

I believe it was so you could get a better overview of what repositories
were syncing. I think the sync status dashboard widget is not currently
well suited for that.

If we had a 'repositories' page where we could just list repos across
the organization, that would likely be a better place to show this
information (and allow the user to filter to see only what are currently
syncing).

If we were going to just yank the sync status page, i think we would
need to do some user interviews and confirm that the products page and
dashboard widgets fulfill their needs.

Sorry, I didn't articulate my idea very well. It would basically be
renaming the products page to "Repositories" and making that page a list of
repositories rather than products. Perhaps they repositories are grouped
into products, perhaps not. Whether or not the concept of a "product" is
actually useful is something that interviews with users can determine.

For sure, and I wouldn't just yank it out (as much as I'd like to) but I do
see an opportunity to remove a page by combining its functionality into
another. This is a trend that I would like to continue going forward as I
believe our current nearly 1-to-1 mapping of pages to database relations
isn't very user friendly. You almost have to know how the application is
designed in order to use it effectively. I would much rather see an
"action based" approach to our pages where the page in the UI is a
representation of something you want to do rather than something that
exists (if that makes sense at all).

Cheers,
Walden

While I have no issues with redesigning things for better UX, I was
hoping for some suggestion (a rename perhaps) that could go into
Katello 3.4. I hit the wrong page every second day, I was wondering if
this is just me or other people also hit Sync Plans instead Sync
Status

Given 3.4 has been released I think that renaming a menu item is not in
order. Patch releases should fix bugs, not introduce enhancements.
