Kexec hangs on DELL Poweredge 740xd

We are trying to provision a bare metal Dell server, but the kexec hangs when provisioning is initiated.

I already saw this already, but it seems to be a vmware guest and not a bare metal system:Discovery (KEXEC) fails. Guest wont restart in new kernel

I tried manual wget and kexec from fdi ssh session, it also got stuck, here is the output:

KExec is known to hang on some servers, it’s a tech preview and it looks like it did not worked out well and we are thinking replacing it with a different approach. It is likely one of its kernel hardware drivers causing this.

We got in touch with Red Hat Support and were able to find workarounds for our issues

  • Adding “nokaslr nomodeset” to the kernel options append of the kexec:
    This allowed the kexec to actually work and finally launch into anaconda.

  • Reworking our partitioning table to check all disks with partprobe if they are actual disks, before partitioning:
    This Dell raid controller signals a hotspare as /dev/sdb to the OS, but read only. So using all disks in `ls /dev/[sv]d[a-z] for partitioning did not work without the second workaround.

So we can now install the server successfully with the RHEL 7.6 kickstart images, including drivers. This hardware is still RHEL certified after all.

Hello, good to hear. Your report seemed like you’ve used latest and greatest Foreman 1.21 alongside with FDI which already has these changes delivered, that’s why I replied how I replied. The “nokaslr nomodeset” are known to help in some cases, but not all.
