RFC: Dual selector component for organisations and locations

I am looking at alternatives to the Dual List Selector used for e.g. organizations and locations

PatternFly recommends Dual List for long lists. It seems that, on average, there is just a handful of organizations and locations, so the two-pane control is often heavier than the task. Seeing both lists may add cognitive load to orient and see/read which one is actually assigned.

I am exploring a compact PatternFly multi-select typeahead instead: type to find a name, check the items, and see the selection as chips in the field. This would take less space and can combine locations and organisations on the same page/tab/form.

If you assign orgs/locations in Foreman, I would like to know:

• Roughly how many organizations and locations do you have?
• Do you need both lists visible at once, or is a compact select enough?
• Do you need bulk select for add/remove?

Roughly how many organizations and locations do you have?
Most customers only have one organization, one location. Some have up to 5 or 10. I only know one which has so many that Satellite support told him this are to many to be supported!

Do you need both lists visible at once, or is a compact select enough?
With this numbers I would they having them both together is convenient.

Do you need bulk select for add/remove?
Yes, when systems are added via reports from config management and with multiple organizations/locations are placed in “any”.

1. Less than five
2. Compact select should be enough - with a slight preference for second design as more brief
3. It would still be nice to have

I like the proposal, but can’t we put the selected elements into the drop down to save space? This way we could stuff both Org and Loc into a single pane eliminating one Tab. That is few extra clicks saved.

I understand the real estate within the drop down is not limitless, but we could do something like:

Organizations: MyOrg OtherOrg +2 more

I would really appreciate some shortcut for “Select All” somewhere, it could be actually single instance on the pane. I mean, it would select all organizations and locations which is very often what I want to do.
