VMware ESXi 4.1 Integration question

What license do you have as the free license won't let you make api calls.

Hey I have an ESXi 4.1 node and want to integrate into foreman. I was
able to add it to compute resources but am not able to bring up virtual
machines list. I wait for hours not difference. Foreman is install on
Centos 6.3 using forman 1.0.1. All the packages are installed for vmware.
All packages at that version also. Am I missing something? I would like
to better document this also since there is some. And I guess a good
question also does ESXi not integrate the same way?

Yes Free License. So that is it. That is good to know. We will be
switching to a paid license soon so that is good to know.

Another option is to consider oVirt (ovirt.org) as a real alternative

Alternatively you can run in unlicensed mode and have access to all the
enterprise features for 30 days or until you license the product. This
would be a way to get around your issue.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I run ovirt 3.1 at a non profit during my
free time. But for the company I work at they only use vmware and redhat
os. So I will try the nightlies first. Do I need just foreman-vmware
package or will this trigger a bunch of dependencies? This is a really
great project and I look forward to provisioning and auditing this way.

So I am able to add an ESXi server to compute resources but am not able to
list vms at all. Is that a limitation of vmware integration in ESXi also?
I am using nightly but had to add dev repo also some ruby gems missing in
the nightly FYI.

Currently I believe that the code in develop requires:

  1. Connecting to vcenter instance rather than directly to a vmware host
  2. managing clusters vs a single host

(Unless Ohad checked in some changes he was testing.)

In addition, I am not sure the full VMWare API is available for folks
using the "free" version. (One may need at a minimum the "essentials"
license.)

These are my initial thoughts, but those that know the details better
may be able to give a more accurate response.
