Foreman Provisioning Interest Group

Coming fresh from the CfgMgmtCamp 2025, I’d like to share this idea with the community and broader audience. During the conference, I had the chance to discuss it with Foreman developers and Foreman users, Atix folks, and many others. And now I feel it’s time to share it with you.

What is it about?

I feel that we lack strategy, plan, and vision (pick your word) in the provisioning area. The current state is that “it just works,” but the potential for improvement is excellent, and it would be a shame to lose it.

The opportunity

  • We can define the strategy, identify priorities
  • We can design it
  • Identify features & functionalities for deprecation
  • Discus improvements for the workflows
  • Explore the market

What is the goal

Longterm

  • Define Foreman’s position in the provisioning.
  • Upstream first.
  • Do less, get more.
  • Follow the market, community needs,
  • Investigate new features (opportunities)
  • Reduce the complexity & simplify

Short term (upcoming months)

In the short term, we’d like to focus on identifying minor, easy-to-do improvements & bug fixes to get people involved as soon as possible. Make the first move; start the avalanche.

Other goals are:

  • Schedule regular meetings
  • Put together documents & tickets for tracking the effort
  • Share the effort with the community

Upstream first approach

You might be asking, how about the community? Don’t worry.

All the plans, efforts, and ideas will be shared and discussed with the community. Nothing will be hidden behind hidden meetings.

Can I get involved?

Absolutely! I’ll post the date and time of our first meeting here at community.theforeman.org. Anyone interested in provisioning is welcome to attend.

If you don’t want to attend the meetings, that’s OK; you can discuss it here at Discourse or contribute with testing, reviews, and so on. All ideas and suggestions are welcomed!
