Provisioning SIG meeting 2025-04-02

Notes for Foreman Provisioning Interest Group meetup No. 1

Present: @lstejska, @ekohl, @nofaralfasi, @ikonia, @Jan (I didn’t note it down and have to do this from memory)

  • New discourse category: Provisioning SIG - TheForeman. Notes will be posted here
  • @lstejska held a presentation with the goals of this SIG and the meetings. He promised to share this presentation.
    • It should be a two way conversation: developers need user input from the real world. In doing so the SIG strives to be open and transparent, even if users don’t attend the meeting itself.
    • A core design principle remains: Foreman integrates with solutions but doesn’t try to replicate their functionality. This means Foreman can, for example, provide functionality to configure kickstart to log to a syslog server but won’t implement a syslog server itself.
  • RFCs
  • User feedback on pain points
    • Creating a new OS new minor version (so Red Hat 9.5 → 9.6) is painful. If you do it in advance you can clone but if it was already created you can’t and need to do it manually. Uploading facts can cause a new OS minor version to be created which makes this very easy to trigger. During discussion it’s suggested that implementing Copy settings on an existing OS is the most straight forward solution.
    • Global status on the new all hosts page is missing
